Did you know that the average bathroom remodel cost in America is $8,098? Of course, this can vary quite a bit, depending on what exactly you end up doing.

If you are doing a minor bathroom remodel, it could be as little as $4,280. But if you end up renovating your entire bathroom from floor to ceiling, then it could be as high as $28,268 (or more).

Are you interested in doing a bathroom remodel soon, but floundering because you don't know where to begin? Read our article below for some tips on how to plan your bathroom renovation with flair and ease.

Start by Thinking about Your Bathroom Functionally

The first thing you will want to do when planning a bathroom remodel is to think about functionality. What exactly do you want in your bathroom?

Do you want to have both a bathtub and a stand-up shower, or just one of them? Do you want a wet room floor with just a pane of glass separating the shower area from the rest of the bathroom? Is a bidet important to you?

Once you start thinking about these questions, you will realize either that you have a clear idea of what you want your new bathroom to look like or that you need some outside help with it. That's when you can contract a bathroom designer or contractor.

Then Think about the Aesthetic Perspective

Of course, a bathroom isn't just a functional room nowadays. In the past, that might have been the case, but nowadays, a bathroom is as important a part of the house as the bedroom or kitchen.

Start putting down your thoughts about what you would like your bathroom to look like, aesthetically speaking. Do you want a modern or a traditional look? Do you wish to have a lot of paintings on the wall or just a solid paint color throughout?

One way to start getting more bathroom remodel ideas is to start looking at Pinterest or other magazines online that have pictures of beautiful bathrooms from all over the world. This should get your creative juices flowing.

Consider Your Budget

This is an unfortunate part of the equation, but it's something to consider early on. You don't want to build a plan for your perfect bathroom renovation and realize that you can't afford most of the essential items.

Once you know what your bathroom remodel cost is, you can also start saving up for it. It's not necessary to do your entire remodel in one go. Maybe you can do it in bits and pieces over a couple of years, if you think you can save up for it over time.

Also, there are many bathroom designers and contractors who will take payment in installments, so take advantage of that, if you need more help paying off your bathroom remodel.

Can You Change Your Layout or Not?

Another thing that a layperson like you might not be aware of, is whether the layout you wish to create in your new bathroom, is possible or not. Certain structures are inbuilt, like your plumbing and other foundational matters, and cannot be changed or moved around.

Speak to remodeling contractors and ask them if your desired layout is feasible or not. They might give you the go-ahead for it, or they might ask you to change certain items, so your renovation can fit the underlying structure of your home better.

Lighting Makes the Bathroom

You don't want to take a shower in a dark, dingy, and airless bathroom. Not only is it unhygienic as bacteria will fester easier in damp, dark, and unventilated places, but it's also not so much fun.

Think about the kind of lighting you wish to include in your bathroom. Ideally, you will have some natural lighting during the day, from a window. But you can also add lighting to your bathroom mirror or cabinetry if you lack space.

Finally, you could also have low-level lighting for nighttime or sensors that turn on the lights when you walk into the bathroom, to help save on energy costs.

Do You Need Your Bathroom Heated?

Do you live in a state that gets extremely cold during the wintertime? You probably don't want to sit on a cold porcelain toilet seat when it's freezing outside.

There are many different ways you can heat your bathroom, either through central heating or piped (wet) underfloor heating. Having a towel radiator to dry wet towels during the summer months is also a great addition.

If you live in a state where it's warm throughout the year, then you can consider having air conditioning vents in your bathroom so you aren't sweaty right out of the shower.

How Much Storage Do You Need?

The amount of storage you add to your bathroom depends on two factors: the amount of space you have, and the number of people in your family. The more space you have, the easier it is to add cupboards or vanity cabinets. But that doesn't mean that you can't also be creative when adding storage to a small bathroom.

Also, if you have a lot of people in your family, you will want to add more storage, to account for all those additional towels, clothes, and toiletry items.
